Listening Instead of Reading: Text-to-Speech Instructions

This week's download is text-to-speech enabled, which means you can have it read aloud to you rather than reading it yourself — or follow along with both at once. Here's how to activate that feature across different devices and platforms:

On Desktop — Adobe Acrobat Reader:

  1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader

  2. Click View in the top menu

  3. Select Read Out Loud

  4. Select Activate Read Out Loud

  5. Choose Read This Page Only or Read to End of Document

To customize the reading voice or speed: go to Edit > Preferences > Reading, uncheck Use Default Voice, and select your preferred voice from the dropdown. You can also adjust words per minute to a pace that works for you.

Keyboard shortcut to activate: Shift + Ctrl + Y (Windows)

On the Web — Adobe Acrobat:

  1. Open the PDF in your browser via Adobe Acrobat on the web

  2. Select the Read Aloud tool from the toolbar

  3. The document will begin reading from the start

  4. Use the playback controls to adjust speed, voice, skip paragraphs, or pause

On Mobile — iOS:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content

  2. Toggle on Speak Screen or Speak Selection

  3. Open the PDF

  4. To hear the full screen: swipe down with two fingers

  5. To hear selected text: highlight the text and tap Speak

On Mobile — Android:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-Speech

  2. Toggle on Select to Speak

  3. Open the PDF

  4. Tap the accessibility button to activate and select the text you want read aloud

A Note on PDF Accessibility

Text-to-speech works best with tagged PDFs. This document has been prepared with accessibility in mind. If you experience any issues with the read aloud function, please reach out at ginger@ComprehensiveLiteracySolutions.com.
